Fiercely competitive

My husband’s family loves to play card games. For 25 years, for every holiday or family gathering, the brothers and sisters and now the younger generation have spent countless hours around the dining room table dealing cards and talking smack.

But I’m not much of a competitor, so for 25 years I’ve either 1. opted to be social and watch as the games play out or 2. retreated to a comfy couch to read until the players break for a meal. (Strategy No. 2 wins the vast majority of the time.)

For the new issue of Lawrence Magazine, I spent some time with the ultra-competitive members of the Kaw Valley Bridge Club. Their take-no-prisoners approach to duplicate bridge makes the family’s fiercest games of pitch look tame, but they were also some of the most delightful people I’ve had the pleasure of writing about.
